Chiefs drop home game to Wellington

On a night when the Santa Fe R-X School District celebrated the life and very successful coaching career of the late Bill Fox, the Wellington Tigers proved to be too much.The Tigers capitalized on several Santa Fe turnovers and rolled to a 65-22 Central River League I-70 Division victory.Despite the loss, Santa Fe head coach Chad Meyer was pleased with the turnout to honor a Santa Fe icon.“I am so glad that so many former students/players made it back for the game and helped celebrate Coach Fox and all he gave to our community,” Meyer noted.Fox ran the table — 14-0 — and won a state title with the Chiefs in 2000.

‘Hounds, Chiefs lose homecoming games

Sweet Springs scored five touchdowns but it wasn’t enough versus the visiting Wellington Tigers last Friday night.The Tigers spoiled Sweet Springs’ homecoming 54-38 in a Central River League I-70 Division game.Wellington led the close game after each quarter – 14-8, 32-22 and 46-38.“I am very pleased with how hard our kids competed,” SSHS head coach Jeff Holtzman said.

Wildcats race past Chiefs on gridiron

For the first time since the COVID-altered 2020 season, the Slater Wildcats have won three games in one season on the gridiron.The Wildcats put on their track shoes and scored early and often, rolling to an 82-0 victory over the Santa Fe Chiefs at home last Friday night.Slater first-year head coach Mitchell Jenkins says the ‘Cats came ready to play.“I think we scored on our first nine possessions, and a lot of those one play and two-play drives,” Jenkins said.
