Lyonel Harlan Charles, 88, of rural Sweet Springs, Mo., died Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Golden Oaks Assisted Living in rural Marshall.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2023, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall with William W. Harlow officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Sweet Springs. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Born May 18, 1934, in New Sharon, Iowa, he was the son of the late Cyrus Charles and Mabel Irene Gay Charles. On May 27, 1953, he married Margaret Elizabeth Kreisel, who survives of the home. He served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960 and was honorably discharged, having attained the rank of Airman First Class. Lyonel lived in the Houstonia and Sweet Springs areas most of his life, was a member of Houstonia Baptist Church, and had served on the Pettis County R-I School Board. He worked for nearly 30 years delivering fuel to farmers and others. Lyonel was an avid hunter, especially in the mountains, and hunted deer, turkey, elk, bear, mountain lions, raccoon and antelope. He was well known for dog breeding, having sold throughout the United States; played third base in fast pitch softball and was a little league baseball coach. He will be remembered by many for his love of singing country music.
In addition to his wife of nearly 70 years, Marge; he is survived by one son, Randal Charles (Lisa); one daughter, Brenda Perkins (Daryl); four grandchildren, Dawn Heizman, Eric Perkins, Shawn Charles and Cody Perkins; four step-grandchildren, Jenee Helein, Chris Wallen, Adrienne Burkholder and Brian Perkins; several great-grandchildren; twin sister, Ganelle Reid (Lee); one brother, Willis Charles (Betsy); as well as nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Lyonel was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Ryan David Charles; and one brother, Robert “Bob” Charles.
