Charles M. ‘Charlie’ Tryban

Charles M. “Charlie” Tryban, 88, of Marshall, Mo., longtime City Administrator, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2023, at The Manor at Elfindale in Springfield, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023, at Campbell-Lewis Chapel in Marshall with William W. Harlow officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to family choice, payable to Charles D. Tryban, which will be for a memorial at Indian Foothills Golf Course, one of Charlie’s favorite places. Friends may sign the online register book at www.campbell-lewis.com.

Born May 9, 1934, in Du Quoin, Ill., he was the son of the late Charles Edward Tryban and Edith E. Norris Tryban Hankins. He graduated from Du Quoin High School in 1952. On Nov. 27, 1955, he married Earlene M. Dexter, who survives. They moved to Marshall in 1957, from Decatur, Ill., to manage John Green Department Store later becoming P.N. Hirsch. He then worked for Rose and Buckner, becoming a partner, then became a Manpower Specialist for the Missouri Department of Social Services. Charlie served as City Administrator for the City of Marshall for 25 years, retiring on Dec. 31, 2009. He served on the Marshall City Council and the Marshall Public School Board for six years, having served as president; was a member and past president of Kiwanis Club; involved with Marshall Municipal Band since 1986, having served as their business manager; and was instrumental in the building of Indian Foothills Skate Park. Charlie was a member of First United Methodist Church in Marshall. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, bike riding, walking, playing bridge, golfing and bowling.    

Charlie will be remembered as the “blower of bubbles,” “pusher of the toy cars,” “the carver of pumpkins,” and the “wisher of the stars.” His life was lived for others, and he gave everything for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Earlene; three children, Stephanie K. Davis (Steve) of Springfield, Charles D. Tryban (Amy) of Leawood, Kan.; and Patrick J. Tryban (Brandie) of Overland Park, Kan.; 14 grandchildren, Shane Davis (Brooke), Caleb Davis, Drew Townlian (Jordan), Austin Davis (Caity), Henry, Maddy, Martha, Sam, Ben, Patrick, Caroline, Harry, Frankie and Olivia Tryban; three great-grandchildren, Sydney, Kinslee and Cole Davis; one sister, Mollie Turnage (Gene) of Marion, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda S. Tryban; and one brother, James Tryban.
