Bruner’s B-B-Q, founded in the mid-1950s by Mr. Owen C. Bruner, was located at 532 E Washington in Marshall. Bruner’s B-B-Q was very popular and was especially known for the barbeque ribs they served. Many people enjoyed the delicious barbeque. Owen Bruner continued to operate Bruner’s B-B-Q from when he began the business until his retirement in the mid-1970s. He was famous for his barbeque sauce.

Vice President John Bargfrede called the meeting of the Optimist Club of Marshall to order on Saturday, July 23, at Bloomfield’s Family Restaurant. Kenneth Ray Clause gave the invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Annie Collier. It was noted that the district convention would be Aug. 11-13 in Springfield, and the registration cutoff date is Aug. 5. Bargfrede reported that some club members were building several new boards for the club’s corn hole tournament to be held Aug. 27. He also noted that several of our boards were used at the recent Optimist International convention in Reno. Upcoming events include the club’s participation in Kids’ Day at the state fair on Aug. 17, and club members assisting in the school’s S.A.F.E. project on Aug. 11. Jim Johnson reported that initial plans were being made for the annual gourmet popcorn sales to be held this fall. Bargfrede introduced the morning’s speaker Tom Oldham, facility manager of Retrieving Freedom. This organization, with headquarters in Sedalia, changes lives through the training and placement of service dogs for veterans with disabilities and children with autism. Norine Gaskill held the morning’s selected jackpot number, but she did not draw the winning card. Dennis Desmond closed the meeting by leading in the recitation of the Optimist creed. A board meeting was held immediately following the regular meeting. The next club meeting will be Saturday, Aug. 13, at Bloomfield’s at 7:30 a.m.

Youth activities showcased at Saline County Fair

Families and youth gathered in Marshall for the 2022 Saline County Fair held July 9-17. The county fair provides youth with an opportunity to improve communication skills, teamwork abilities, and ultimately take pride in presenting their year-long projects. Highlights include a variety of livestock shows, 4-H and FFA project displays, and the Premium Sale held Friday evening. This year, more than $140,000 was donated to youth involved in the sale. New this year was the Champion’s Row — an opportunity for winning youth from each species to meet the sale donors prior to the sale. 4-H also introduced eight new Best in Show awards for the top projects among the more than 650 entries presented for judging and 148 advancing to the Missouri State Fair.
