Former first-round pick Shelton gets fresh start with Chiefs

ST. JOSEPH (AP) _ Former firstround pick Danny Shelton began his latest fresh start with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, hoping to earn a place in the middle of their defensive line after agreeing last week to a contract for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old Shelton appeared in 13 games for the Giants last year, when he rotated up front as primarily a runstuffing defensive tackle. That came after a season with the Patriots, two with the Lions and Shelton's first three with the Browns, who made him the 12th overall pick in the 2015 draft after a standout career at Washington.

Missouri puts recreational marijuana on November ballot

Missouri’s General Election ballot in November will include an effort to legalize adult recreational marijuana. Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft’s office certified the ballot measure led by a group called LegalMO2022. The initiative petition would let people 21 and older to use cannabis and allow Missourians with nonviolent marijuana-related offenses to automatically have their related criminal records cleared. The program would include a six-percent state tax with proceeds to benefit veterans’ healthcare, drug addiction treatment and Missouri’s Public Defender System. According to LegalMO2022, state officials certified 214,535 voter signatures across the state’s eight congressional districts as valid, exceeding the required minimum of 184,720 needed to make the fall ballot.

Biden approves disaster declaration for MO flooding

ST. LOUIS (AP) _ President Joe Biden on Monday approved Missouri's request for a federal disaster declaration in response to severe flooding. The declaration makes St. Louis-area residents eligible for federal help with temporary housing, home repairs and some health expenses. Record rainfall caused widespread flash flooding across the St. Louis area July 26, then struck again July 28 as residents were still recovering from the first wave of flooding.

Associated Press BEREA, Ohio (AP) _ The Cleveland Browns’ training camp hasn’t lacked for drama because of quarterback Deshaun Watson’s NFL disciplinary case over sexual misconduct allegations. Now, there’s a new storyline involving running back Kareem Hunt, even if the head coach insists the 27-year-old’s fight for an extension is “normal.” The NFL’s rushing leader in 2017 demanded a trade after the team denied his request for a long-term contract extension, holding himself out of team drills Friday and Saturday in protest but rejoining on Sunday.
