Santa Fe loses to Bobcats

A week after upsetting fourth-seeded Orrick 30-20, the short-handed Santa Fe Chiefs ran into state-ranked Braymer.The Bobcats touchdowns six times in seven first-half possessions and went on to win the District 4 semifinal 69-14 in front of their home fans.All-state senior quarterback Jordan Haley was a big part of the show for the Bobcats, as he threw six TD passes in the first half and eight in the game.Braymer, which improved to 10-0, led 24-0 at the end of the first quarter and 48-6 at halftime.

Owls down Saint Paul for district crown

Justin Van Winkle’s Marshall Owls’ soccer team is headed back to the state playoffs.The Owls claimed their second district title in three years and third in Van Winkle’s 13 years as head coach last Thursday night at Knob Noster.Top-seeded Marshall scored twice in the first half and two more times in the second half and defeated the third-seeded Saint Paul Saints 4-1.“It was a big win, district finals,” MHS head coach Justin Van Winkle said.

Owl swimmers close out solid season

Competing against swimmers from 12 other schools, the season came to an end for the Marshall Owls last week at the Independent League championships at Belton High School last week.Marshall finished 11th in the final team standings with 69 points, but that didn’t tell the whole story.It was all about improving on times in individual events and relays, and some of them did just that.The 400-yard relay team placed sixth overall in a new PR (personal-record) time of 4 minutes, 12.62 seconds.

Spartans stun Valley with late comeback

After playing pretty well for 50-plus minutes, the last 10 minutes turned out to be disastrous for the Missouri Valley College football team last Saturday.Host Missouri Baptist scored two touchdowns in the final 4-1/2 minutes, erasing a nine-point deficit and stopped a late Valley possession to win the Heart of America Athletic Conference South Division game 29-23 last Saturday.Valley head coach Casey Creehan was disappointed in the outcome, but said the Vikings gave 100 percent.“They played hard.
