Owl wrestlers compete at Battle on the Katy Trail

The Sweet Springs basketball teams suffered losses at the W-K Shootout in the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Building at State Fair Community College in Sedalia Saturday.
The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame has announced its latest induction class, and selected are long-time former Head Coach of the men’s wrestling program, and current Missouri Valley College Athletic Director Mike Machholz, along with the men’s wrestling teams from 1996-2005. Machholz was selected for induction after his 30 years of work building and leading the men’s wrestling program at Missouri Valley.

Marshall senior Alexis Neff scored a game-high 23 points, including two crucial free throws with just over a minute to play, and the Lady Owls held off a determined Father Tolton Catholic Trailblazers team 58-57 on Kevin Hart Court at MHS Thursday. T he Lady Owls struggled from the charity stripe most of the game, but Neff calmly swished her two charities to increase MHS’s one-point lead to three with 1:09 to go.
An individual and a relay team won events for the Marshall Lady Owls at the Belton Swim Meet Tuesday. The Lady Owls also had some good performances at the Winnetonka Holiday Invite Dec.
High School Friday, Dec. 16 Boys Wrestling Marshall at Battle on the Katy Trail, Sedalia (Mathewson Exhibition Center) Girls Wrestling Marshall at Fort Zumwalt East Invitational Saturday, Dec. 17 Girls Swimming Marshall at Platte County, 11:30 a.m. Girls and Boys Basketball Santa Fe vs. Stover at W-K Shootout, State Fair Community College, Sedalia, 1:30 and 3 p.m.
It was a battle to the final buzzer at in Alma Thursday, and the Santa Fe Lady Chiefs came away with a 31-30 non-conference victory over the Carrollton Lady Trojans. The Trojans took the nightcap by beating the Santa Fe boys 41-33.

Eight Sweet Springs and four Santa Fe football players earned postseason honors in voting by the Missouri 8-Man Coaches’ Association. The Greyhounds, playing their first-ever season of 8-man football, made it all the way to the state semifinal round before falling to Bishop LeBlond.

Former Missouri Valley College men’s rodeo cowboy Jess Pope captured the 2022 Bareback Riding World Championship, along with placing first in the average at the 2022 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nev. Pope captured his first world championship after finishing on top of the prize earnings standings in Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association bareback riding.
Wins were hard to come by for the Marshall Lady Owls’ wrestlers at the Excelsior Springs Tournament Friday. However, sophomore Sherlyn Solano won all four of her matches to take the crown at 190.
