Help is on the way

Early one morning, as I arrived at the VA hospital with my elderly father, I was absolutely overwhelmed at the sight of rows of wheelchairs at the ready. The first thing that struck me was that they fully expected to use all those chairs that morning, probably more than once. The second was that they were prepared for whoever showed up.

The Shepherd’s Heart

As we continue to look forward to another year, another chance at life you might say, I think there are several keys to doing so in a productive manner. Strangely enough, a good memory is not always a great asset! It is not the things we forget which we should have remembered which cause the most trouble; it is the things we remember which we should have forgotten.

In Jesus we see how God comes to us

Two days after Christmas, and the streets are lined with garbage cans overflowing with bags stuffed with wrapping paper, boxes, and who knows what else. Your own residence may or may not be cleaned up yet from any festivities you may have had so far this Christmas season, and you may not be ready to receive visitors until you’ve had a chance to address this situation. Things can be messy and unsettled, and we don’t often like it when others see us in disorder.

The 2023 legislative session begins

Legislators returned to the Capitol this week as the First Regular Session of the 102nd General Assembly got underway Wednesday. Eight newly elected senators were sworn in for the first time and I look forward to getting to know these new colleagues and working with them to pass legislation that benefits all Missourians. Lawmakers also had an opportunity to interact during the traditional Legislative Ball, which was held the first night of the session. It was great to welcome friends, family and well-wishers to the majestic State Capitol Rotunda for this festive occasion and begin the session on a note of ceremony, collegiality and good will.

So it goes

When I first started writing this column, the act included a typewriter and a few sheets of blank paper. And, as you might guess, there were times when that blank piece of paper just sort of sat there in the machine, staring back at me, almost daring me to find something interesting to write about.

Recollections: A kind community

Acts of kindness, be they random or planned, lay in the foundation of the 'Golden Rule.' The principle of treating others as one wants or would have wanted to be treated is something some do instinctively; others may need to decide if they are part of the problem or part of the solution. The truth is I enjoy doing acts of kindness. I also appreciate receiving random acts of kindness. Witnessing random acts of kindness brings me joy.
