Members of Malta Bend’s American Legion Post 558 performed their annual flag retirement ceremony on June 14 — Flag Day — at the Post home. Over 150 flags, many of which had been deposited at the flag drop boxes at the Knights of Columbus hall and the Saline County Courthouse, were retired.
During the weekend of July 2-4, the village of Arrow Rock will be hosting the 50th anniversary of the filming of “Tom Sawyer” with events, special visitors, and a whole-town commemoration of this motion picture and one of its greatest stars.
Joan R. Carrender (Moore) will be celebrating her 90th birthday from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 12. She is a lifelong resident of Sweet Springs, and the event will take place at First Baptist Church, 104 Main St., Sweet Springs, MO 65351. A card shower is requested.
When a member of Malta Bend American Legion Post 558’s funeral honors team receives a telephone call from team lead member Dave Duffer, chances are it’s not just a social call. And chances are the member always answers Duffer’s request for funeral participation with “when and where do you need me?”
In collaboration with Friends of Arrow Rock, the Arrow Rock State Historic Site, Missouri River Bird Observatory and the Study Circle in Arrow Rock on Racism (SCARR), Experience Arrow Rock invites residents and visitors to join in a celebration of Juneteenth as a national holiday.
JEFFERSON CITY (June 4, 2022) — Join Suzanne Jones as she presents traditional stories from the Choctaw, Cherokee and Delaware nations/tribes, all of which Jones either descended from or is a tribal member. Missouri Humanities and Missouri State Parks invite the public to the storytelling at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park. Jones will tell tales around the fire in the park’s campground.
A group of sixth, seventh and eighth grade Bueker Middle School students set out to evaluate all of the local hamburgers in Marshall. They had a goal to increase their knowledge and appreciation of what we have locally. As a side benefit they would give a little bit of a boost to our local economy.
The Slater School District held May graduation ceremonies for both the preschool and eighth grade. For the eighth-grade graduation, Emily Anderson won the Daughters of the American Youth Citizenship Award. Ben Gochenour, Kendall Guthrie and Robert James Pannell IV won the American Legion Award.
As alumni plan to return to Marshall for the “Return to the Roost” event — a homecoming for all graduating classes of Marshall High School, one local church will offer an event to coincide with other community gatherings.
Care Connection for Aging Services will present an online “Caring for You, Caring for Me” workshop based on curriculum from the Rosalyn Carter Institute for Caregiving beginning in late May. The first session will take place on May 24.
