James Box has been called to serve as the new Branch President of the Marshall Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was sustained by vote at the Aug.7 Sacrament Meeting.
Friends of Pennytown held an annual reunion on Sunday, Aug. 7, which included a church service inside Pennytown Freewill Baptist Church. Pennytown is a historic black hamlet located approximately 8 miles south of Marshall, and the church is the only structure that remains. According to information on the organization’s website, approximately 40 families lived in the township, which covered 64 acres of land. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Pictured on the top right is Virginia Huston, who was the last person born at Pennytown.
It will soon be time to place more bricks in the Veterans Memory Walk of Honor at the Saline County Courthouse. Brick applications are available from Ed Reis at Wood & Huston Bank, Anne Hisle State Farm Insurance, and from the Recorder’s, Collector’s and Treasure’s offices at the Saline County Courthouse. Care Connection for Aging Services is accepting registration for the next Total Brain Health class that beginsonline on Aug. 9. Total Brain Health concentrates on body (physical fitness), mind (cognitive training that can revive skills diminished by age), and spirit (strong satisfying socialties). The philosophy is that all minds can thrive, and the class delivers tools everyone can use to build better brain health. Research shows that these programs empower participants to build better brain health. Satisfactionratings are 99 percent.
A community drama re-enacting the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus will take place from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6 and 7. The event is sponsored by the Rev.Jeanette Pack Ministries and will take place at 307 E. High St., in Marshall. All are welcome to attend the free event and are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

The Marshall Municipal Band will host its annual ice cream social and concert this Thursday evening. The event will take place at the First United Methodist Church’s New Life Center, located at 225 E. Arrow St. Serving of ice cream and cupcakes will begin at 6 p.m. and will continue through the concert which begins at 7 p.m. Both are free to the public.
Local women are invited to attend a free, interdenominational , Christ-centered afternoon of inspiration, encouragement, fellowship, and service. Marshall Ministerial Alliance is sponsoring a Christian Women’s Conference, at St Peter Catholic Church on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 1-5 p.m.
The Marshall Senior Center reopened for a variety of activities and care management beginning Monday, July 18, according to Center Coordinator Jamie Oltmer. “We are ready to welcome folks into the center for cards, board games, socializing and other activities,” Oltmer said.
