The Marshall Kiwanis Club held its regular meeting at noon, Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Montague’s. Steve Hartwig offered the invocation, and Club President Pam LaFrenz led the Pledge of Allegiance and called the meeting to order with 20 members and two guests in attendance. Discussion continued on the club’s upcoming Chili Dinner to be held Feb. 9 at the Marshall High School Commons. Volunteers were needed to cut up onions. The membership also voted to have a “Sweetheart Dinner” on Tuesday, Feb. 13, in lieu of a regular meeting that same date. Beth Walker introduced her guest, Walter Rodriquez, who is the Director of IT at the Saline County Career Center. Rodriquez stated that Information Technology is involved in everyone’s life in some manner or other. His background has not only provided him with in-depth knowledge of the field, but his prior work experience dealt with cyber security. He said his passion for information technology drives him to make his classroom and its students feel stimulated, as well as challenged. Walter introduced one of his students, Colton Gotmer, who is involved with SCCC’s Skills USA program. Gotmer stated that he is primarily involved with Web Design, but he has benefited greatly from all aspects of information technology. Following a round of questions from the members, the club congratulated Rodriquez and Gotmer for their remarks. The meeting was then adjourned with Don Garst winning the $10.50 pot. The next Kiwanis meeting will be Jan. 30, which will also include a Board of Directors meeting.
