Howard Bell celebrates 90th birthday

Howard Bell was the director of the band program for the Marshall Public Schools from 1958-1962. He celebrated his 90th birthday in July with several Marshall friends in attendance. The event highlighted performances by members of the Marshall Municipal Band, the Raytown Community Band, Spirit of Independence Band, the Overland Park Civic Band, and the Raytown Community Choir. The 2 1/4 hour program also featured three of the Bells' great-grandchildren performing at the piano and on the trumpet. Mr. Bell was commended for public service-Kiwanis International, 53 years and 42 years a supporter of the Raytown Historical Society. The Marshall High School Class of 1962, having met in Marshall for a reunion, sent a card to Mr. Bell, signed by all graduate attendees.

MHS Class of ’76 gathers for reunion

Members of the Marshall High School Class of 1976 gathered for their 45th/46th class reunion during the weekend of the MHS Return to the Roos, which was held Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11. Their 45th reunion had been rescheduled in 2021 due to COV1D protocols. A social gathering was held on Friday evening at Indian Foothills Park’s North Point Shelter House and Saturday evening during Return to the Roost. Class members enjoyed delicious sandwiches, fruit, charcuterie treats, appetizers and beverages in the east room at Montague’s on the Marshall square. Decorated sugar cookies and cupcakes were furnished by Sherry Shannon Werneke and her family and shared with other attendees outside, as well. Class members participated in various events for the weekends, such as the alumni car show and cruise, golf and tennis events, 1970s block party and general socializing. A few classmates gathered at Bueker Middle School to walk the halls and remember high school and fun times of their past.

Friends of Pennytown holds annual reunion

Friends of Pennytown held an annual reunion on Sunday, Aug. 7, which included a church service inside Pennytown Freewill Baptist Church. Pennytown is a historic black hamlet located approximately 8 miles south of Marshall, and the church is the only structure that remains. According to information on the organization’s website, approximately 40 families lived in the township, which covered 64 acres of land. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Pictured on the top right is Virginia Huston, who was the last person born at Pennytown.
