Arrow Rock State Historic Site Historian/Resource Interpreter Betty Vollmer (left) is photographed with a representative of the World Bird Sanctuary and a bald eagle named Macquire on Saturday, April 27. The World Bird Sanctuary brought the bald eagle to the Birds, Bees and Blooms festival in Arrow Rock. “Macquire was a handsome fellow, and lots of people wanted to take a picture with him,” Vollmer said. “We heard his story of how he came to be at the sanctuary and hope to see him again in the future.”According to their website, the World Bird Sanctuary was founded in 1977 by Walter C. Crawford Jr. to provide the St. Louis area with a hospital for sick or injured raptors. As the Sanctuary grew, so did their mission. Now located on 305 acres of Missouri hardwood forest in partnership with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, World Bird Sanctuary is home to over 200 animals representing over 60 species from all around the world. What began as a small rehabilitation center has grown into an internationally renowned rehabilitation, education, and conservation organization.
