During one morning and afternoon of softball action at the Marshall High School Sports Complex, the Lady Owls accumulated as many victories as they did in all of last season when they were 2-18.The Lady Owls opened the six-team event with a 15-0 victory over Slater, lost 9-1 to Carrollton and rebounded to throttle Knob Noster 10-1 to claim third place.Marshall 15, Slater 0Senior Riley Wilkinson stymied Slater bats.
It was a great way to open the 2024 soccer season for Justin Van Winkle’s Marshall Owls last weekend at the Smith-Cotton Shootout at Liberty Park in Sedalia.The Owls opened their portion of the event with a dominating 6-0 shutout victory over the Sacred Heart Gremlins last Friday and followed that with a 2-0 triumph over the host Smith-Cotton Tigers Saturday.Marshall 6, Sacred Heart 0Marshall scored five of its six goals in the first half versus the Gremlins, including a first-half hat trick by junior Nicholas Tsurkan.The dominance started early for the Owls as junior Danis Alvarez netted the first goal of the season off an assist from Tsurkan in the third minute.Just five minutes later, Tsurkan scored his first goal off a feed from junior Ivan Argueta.In the 16th minute, Argueta netted his first goal of the season off an assist from Danis Alvarez.In the 27th and 36th minutes, Tsurkan finished off his hat trick by scoring off assists from sophomore Josiah Garcia-Ramos and Jonathan Quintana, respectively.The Owls still were dominant in the second half, but they only netted one more goal — as junior Oduver Alvarez scored in the 65th minute.

The Missouri Valley College athletic department recently announced the coaching staff for the 2024-25 men’s wrestling season.
In April, the Heart of America Athletic Conference announced its collaboration with SkyCoach as the official replay review provider for football, commencing with the 2024 season.A news release from the HAAC says, “SkyCoach, renowned for its sideline and officials replay solutions across various levels of play, including high schools, colleges and the CFL (Canadian Football League), brings cutting-edge technology to empower referees and offer coaches the opportunity to challenge calls within the conference.”Also included in the release, “The partnership between the Heart of America Athletic Conference and SkyCoach signifies a collaborative effort to uphold the integrity of the game, while embracing technological advancements that enhance the overall football experience.”At the end of the release, it says, “Over the next few months, conference leadership will review the implementation, with the desire to have access to as many plays or situations as deemed appropriate.”The time is upon us for the unveiling of the new procedures, and new HAAC Commissioner Nik Rule is excited.
