Springtime in the Ozarks is a wonderful sight to see, to feel, to just experience with all your senses really. The trees budding, the blossoms popping out on the Dogwoods and Redbuds, spring rains filling the creeks and ponds, and the fields greening and growing, all work in unison to give one a sense of freshness. The Daf‐fodils and the tulips bring splashes of bril‐liant color here and there around the farm. The birds ‐ the blue‐birds and redbirds and the robins especially ‐ seem to be thankful that winter is slipping away. It seems to speak of a new begin‐ning.
Several weeks ago, I wrote a letter to the editor expressing my concern regarding several items around the city, including the condition of the airport terminal building and the usage of the ½ cent sales tax that was passed in November 2015. I have since learned that the sales tax rev‐enue from that ½ cent can be used anywhere in the General Fund, not just where it was originally planned for. When the city council wanted to pass the tax for the General Fund, ¼ cent was to go to General Fund, and the other ¼ cent was to go to Street/Sanitation, Fire and Police equally. That’s how it was presented, that’s how the brochure was written and that’s how it was talked about to everyone we spoke to. However, since that wasn’t how the ballot lan‐guage was written (1/2 cent for Gen‐eral Fund), it can be spent for anything. Is the spending of this tax illegal? No, it isn’t. That was my mis‐take. I apologize if anyone thought I was accusing them of taking money. That was never the case. In my mind, it’s unethical because that’s not what the people that voted to pass the tax thought they were getting. But that’s not my call, just my opinion. Again, it’s not illegal the way it’s being spent.
