Dozens of tables were filled with patrons talking, enjoying a warm bowl of gumbo, and smiling as they swayed and tapped their feet to the sonorous sounds of a saxophone. On a typical day, customers come into the recently opened Los Compitas restaurant, order from the menu and the bar, and dine surrounded by original brick walls or out back on the patio.
Marshall High School senior soccer player Jason Diaz (front, right) signed a letter of intent this week to play on the pitch for head coach Vladimir Simic (front, left) and the Missouri Valley College Vikings. Diaz was an integral part of Marshall claiming its first-ever state soccer championship in November. Diaz, a defender, earned first-team all-state honors in Class 2; first-team all-Class 2, Region 3; first-team all-Class 2, District 7; and first-team all-North Central Missouri Conference (NCMC). He finished his senior season with one goal and two assists in 25 games played. The Owls finished their season 24-2-1.

Next week is Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Missouri and Kansas. A statewide tornado drill is scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 7. Saline County will be participating, so outdoor storm sirens will sound at that time.
