Many decades ago, when TV was black and white, one of the first public service ads fea‐tured Smoky the Bear. Smoky was the spokesman for the Na‐tional Forest Service. This was during a time when people were start‐ing to gain a greater un‐derstanding of their world. Just a few years previously people were still recovering from World War 2 and not re‐ally thinking about going camping on vaca‐tion. As their awareness then improved through exposure to nature shows on television in the 1950's, people started paying more at‐tention to the world around them.
