The 57th annual installation banquet and awards ceremony of the Optimist Club of Marshall was held Sept. 29 at the First United Methodist Church, with the meal served by Jackson’s Catering. The invocation was given by Matt Pennock, and Paul Collier led the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence in memory of Gene Cassell followed. He had been an active club member for 39 years. Gene had been a distinguished president and had participated in numerous club projects. A brief history of the club was then given.

Even after being told by multiple rehab sites that there was “nothing more they could do for him,” Everett Monteer was determined to walk again. Monteer suffered a crippling injury on June 29, 2021, when he fell backward off a friend’s deck.
Jesus tells us that we are to love our neighbors as ourselves, and when ask who is our neighbor He tells the story of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10: 30 35 who takes time to help a man who he did not know who had been beaten and robbed and left for dead alongside the road. We are to help one another with love and compassion much like the little boy and the farmer and his puppies.
