Owls open at Chillicothe tonight

Ian Verts is excited to get the high school football season under way. Verts is the new head coach of the Marshall Owls, who travel to take on the Chillicothe Hornets Friday, Aug. 26. Verts says the Owls came out of last Friday night’s jamboree at California High School unscathed. They are healthy and ready to go. “I just want to make sure the guys are prepared, and we can give them the confidence to perform at their best,” Verts said. “I want the kids to enjoy the experience and be competitive.”

Sports Editor Coming off a 16-6 campaign, the Marshall Owls’ boys soccer team has high expectations. Head coached by Justin Van Winkle, who is in his 11th season, the Owls lost some of their scoring off a team that averaged 2.63 goals per game. In all, 12 players are gone due to graduation. Armando Farfan was the top scorer lost with five goals and eight assists. Also gone are Omar Torres (7G, 3A); Melvin Morales (1G); and Randy Funes (1A). The seven additional seniors other than the goalkeeper, Kevin Castillo, did not score. The others gone are: Ilir Saliu; Kevin Ceja, Kilmar Cruz, Nick Toliver and Dawson Borja. “We did pretty well rebounding from the seniors we lost the year before.
