Lady Vikings win double-OT thriller
The Missouri Valley College women's basketball team made up a 14-point deficit during the final eight minutes of regulation time to claim a 98-97 double-overtime victory over visiting Heart of America Conference foe Evangel.
The Lady Vikings closed regulation with a 24-10 run behind senior Lena Korovou's five baskets, tying the score on sophomore Shanelle Tolley's lay-up with three seconds remaining.
The first extra period stalemated after Valley senior Hilma Mededovic sank a free throw with eight seconds to go. Mededovic sank two from the line with a second remaining in the second OT, but a foul send freshman Bayley Harman to the stripe with a fraction of a second left --but she only made one shot.
Junior Lexie Vaught led the Lady Crusaders (9-7, 4-7 HAAC) with 26 points, 10 rebounds and five assists -- but that didn't match Tolley's performance of 28 points, 16 boards, six assists and five steals.
Mededovic had 21 points, senior Jaylah Jackson provided 14 points and 10 assists, and Korovou logged 17 points for the Lady Vikings (7-9, 6-5) -- who have won four of their last five games.
The men's game was tied with three-and-a-half minutes to go, but Evangel closed with a 14-4 surge to take an 87-77 decision over Valley.
Junior Clark Brewington and freshman Cade Coffman each scored 18 points for the Crusaders (3-12, 2-8), who controlled the boards by a 50-12 margin and out-shot the home team 44.3 to 37.9 percent from the field.
The Vikings (5-11, 3-7) got 18 points from senior Larry Plummer en route to their third loss in a row.
Valley is scheduled to play Saturday at Culver-Stockton.
