ODESSA -- After running the table on the field Saturday during the Class 1, Individual District 13 Tournament at Odessa, the Marshall boys' tennis team had high hopes that one of its four entries could advance to state.

That dream was snuffed Tuesday by opponents from Kansas City prep schools. The Owls went 0-4 during the Individual Section 7 meet, also at Odessa.

The district champion doubles combo of senior Gerritt Murphy and junior Jack Hemeyer, which qualified for state a year ago, was defeated by Pembroke Hill juniors Sam Kramer and Cormac Chester, 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile, seniors Jude Staley and John Hadley fell 6-0, 6-1 to Barstow seniors Ben Abbas and Steven Ketchmark, which placed third at state in 2014.

Both of the singles matches were shutouts, with the Owls on the wrong side of 6-0, 6-0 scores. Sophomore Isaac Summers was beaten by Barstow sophomore Fletcher Scott, a state medalist last year, and senior Dustin Blankenship fell to Barstow freshman Bradley Frye.

Marshall's season isn't over, but it was an ominous sign that it went 0-3 against four of the Knights. That's because the unbeaten Owls (19-0) take on District 14 champion Barstow (12-2) in the Team Section 4 Tournament semifinal round at Marshall on Saturday.

The other semifinal will pit Chillicothe (15-2) against Savannah (14-3). The sectional champion heads to Springfield on May 28 for the MSHSAA Class 1 Team Championships.
