Owls split duals to open season
CHILLICOTHE -- The Marshall and Chillicothe wrestling teams each won six bouts on the mat Thursday, but the host Hornets enjoyed a 5-2 advantage in pins and 12-0 gap in default points to take a 45-25 non-conference decision.
The Owls would come back to down Maysville, 60-12, with the two teams splitting the four contested weight classes.
The dual opened at 152 pounds, with senior Chris Stephenson getting a 67-second pin for Marshall. Chillicothe would take the next two rounds, junior Matt Shaffer stopping senior Canaan Heinzler (160 pounds) in the second period and sophomore Cuba Chapman notching a 7-3 decision over sophomore Ramon Herrera (170).
The Owls regained the lead at 13-9 as senior Tyler Eidson (182) rolling to an 11-0 major decision and senior T.J. Fox (195) winning by a 10-3 margin.
The Hornets reeled off 18 straight points on pins by freshman John Anderson (220) and junior Chance Holcer (285) and a forfeit before Marshall won back-to-back decisions behind sophomore Austin Ballard (113), 4-1, and freshman Hunter Hostetter (120), 10-9 -- with two takedowns, two reversals and a near-fall.
Chillicothe (2-0) went on another 18-point run on pins by junior Kyler Sewell (126) and sophomore Aaron Baker (132), along with a default. The contest closed with the Owls winning on sophomore Aaron Sims' pin at 145 pounds.
Marshall's victory over the Wolverines (0-2) was due to 48 default points. The Owls got pins from Stephenson and Eidson.
After only one day of rest, Marshall is back in action Saturday in the Park Hill Tournament -- which usually constitutes five duals against mostly larger Kansas City-area schools.
