Lady Chiefs wrap up I-70 crown
ALMA -- The Santa Fe volleyball team was intent on claiming its first I-70 Conference regular season championship since 2008, and wasn't about to let a nagging rival like Concordia spoil it.
The Lady Chiefs disposed of their neighbors for the third time this season Thursday with a 25-11, 25-15 home romp, closing out an undefeated league campaign.
Santa Fe head coach Kinsey Harms, who got both the I-70 Tournament and regular season titles -- her first each -- in less than a week, called it "a tremendous feat."
"It's a great feeling of accomplishment," she declared. "It's been a blessing having these seniors. They have worked so hard over the years."
The upperclassmen have posted a 97-32-10 mark, including 25-3 in the conference, during their careers. Among them, Brooke Barnett had an especially fine performance during Senior Night, setting 18 of the team's 27 kills.
Sophomore Kylie Limback had 13 kills and eght blocks and junior Lexi Smith put down 11 shots and rejected five. Sophomore Kenzie Phillips came up with a team-high four digs and, like Smith, dropped a pair of aces on the Lady Orioles (17-8, 5-1 I-70).
The unranked Lady Chiefs (24-3-2, 7-0) close out the regular season Tuesday with a non-conference match at No. 4 Kansas City Lutheran.
