Vikings play No. 5 Ashford to draw
After battling for 110 minutes, nothing was decided Tuesday between fifth-ranked Ashford (Iowa) and the 10th-ranked Missouri Valley College men's soccer team.
A late goal by the Vikings sent the game into the first of two overtime periods at Gregg-Mitchell Field before the teams settled for a 1-1 stalemate.
Although Valley out-shot the visitors 8-4 in the first half, senior Patrick Kinsella came up with eight saves and the Saints (6-2-1) broke through with a goal by senior Lucas Almeida in the 30th minute.
The Vikings finally broke through with less than five minutes remaining in regulation time, senior Alberto Linan Gomez coming up with a loose ball in the box and poking it into the net. Each team got off four shots in the OT periods, but both Kinsella and Valley senior Josh Wells were up to the task.
It was a much different contest for the Vikings than the one they played Sunday at home against Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), an 8-0 rout. Senior Nicholas Alexander had the hat trick for Valley with three goals, earning the Heart of America Conference's "offensive player of the week" award.
Junior Thiago Ferreira had a pair of goals for MVC, which dominated the Tigers (4-2-1) in shot attempts, 37-4.
The Vikings (6-1-) begin league play Saturday at Avila.
A pair of non-conference victories extended the Valley women's soccer team's win streak to seven matches.
The Lady Vikings got a goal from junior Kendra Clamors late in the second half Saturday for a 1-0 decision at William Woods. Although Valley had a 22-9 shot advantage on the Lady Owls (3-4), it was unlucky, with attempts by freshmen Lais Pazzini and Riley Kerr rattling off the frame in the first half.
Tuesday at William Penn (Iowa), the Lady Vikings had to come from behind for 2-1 win. The Lady Statesmen (5-5) went in front on a penalty kick by senior Kirsty Fraser in the 16th minute of the first half.
Valley tied it before the break on a shot by Kerr and got the game-winner in the 73rd minute when Kerr converted a feed from freshman Andrea Garcia.
Senior Erika Diarte had four saves for the Lady Vikings (7-1-1), who begin their Heart of America Conference campaign Saturday at Avila.
DES MOINES, Iowa -- The MVC women's volleyball team rebounded from its first loss of the season Sept. 19 with a 25-13, 25-15, 25-22 non-conference sweep at AIB (Iowa) business college.
Junior Rebecca Jones had 12 kills and senior Jada Hollingshead had 10 for the Lady Vikings, who excelled with a .398 attack percentage. Senior Diane Dellasalla came up with 17 digs and senior Taylor Frederiksen and freshman Lauren Eldridge each dropped in a pair of aces on the Lady Eagles (3-17).
Valley (11-1) will play its first Heart of America Conference home match today against Central Methodist.
BOONVILLE -- The Valley men's golf team placed third and the women fourth this week in the Central Methodist Invitational at Boonville.
Freshman Zac Howard shot a five-over-par 147 for seventh place and freshman Cody Stevens shared eighth place at 148 for the Vikings, whose team score of 597 was 14 points off the pace of winning Baker.
The MVC had 798 points, led by freshman Clarissa Morin's 177 for 13th place. William Woods took the title at 591.
The Vikings will host the Valley Fall Invitational on Oct. 7-8 at Indian Foothills Golf Course.
