Runners race for sight during Lion's Club 5K
With more athletes registered this year than in 2011, the Lion's Club 5K run/walk will have an even greater impact.
Forty-five people participated in the run Saturday morning, Sept. 8, which raised funds for sight-related projects such as Leader Dog, Mid-South Lions Sight and Hearing Service, Lions Club International and the Missouri Lion Eye Research Foundation in Columbia, according to organizers.
The route began at the Lion's Club shelter house at Indian Foothills Park, weaved through the park's north entrance, and then followed Eastwood Street, Lincoln Avenue and Yerby Street. The overall winners of the race were Jason Schwab, first place, and Damon Williams, second place, who are Missouri Valley College cross-country athletes.
Winners for each of the three divisions -- senior, regular and youth -- will soon be announced.
The 5K run/walk is the kick-off event for Saturday's Santa Fe Trail Days. The day-long celebration is located at the park and activities are scheduled in conjunction with Day at the Park.
