The Lighthouse Shelter's signature fundraising event, Helping Handbags, held Thursday, Oct. 6, was a huge success according to organizers.

Seventy-one bags were donated for the event's silent auction, and after the event volunteers continued to total up the amount of funds raised.

"It's a great turnout. We've had a great response," said Debbie Wallace, executive director of The Lighthouse Shelter.

Individuals, organizations and businesses, such as Marshall Rotary Club, Viking Athletic Goods and Springwater Greenhouse, among many others, created bags ranging from $10 to $1,500 worth of merchandise to be auctioned off Thursday evening.

"There's something here for everyone," Wallace continued. "We appreciate the support shown to us by the entire community."

Helping Handbags first began in the fall of 2010 and quickly became one of the Lighthouse's largest fundraising events. Last fall, the auction raised more than $5,000, in addition to admission prices, sponsorships and monetary donations.
