Health Department board gets report on recent emergency drill

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

"It was the best ice storm we've ever had. It was 70 degrees."

And that wasn't the only good news from the recent emergency exercise conducted by local health and emergency agencies, according to Russ Donnell, Saline County Health Department planner and Medical Reserve Corp coordinator.

Donnell provided the Saline County Health Department board with a report on the results of the exercise at the board's regular meeting Tuesday, Oct. 12.

The exercise involved Fitzgibbon Hospital, SCHD, MRC and Marshall Police Department working through a scenario in which the area was hit by a major ice storm during flu season.

The resulting influx of patience overwhelmed the hospital emergency room, and the exercise involved setting up an overflow emergency treatment center and dealing with a variety of problems generated by the situation.

Donnell said the exercise went extremely well, with the participating agencies not only working through the problems, but learning more about other agencies' capabilities and resources.

More information to follow.
