Owls improve to 4-0 in NCMC
The Marshall boys' soccer team remained perfect in NCMC play Monday with a 1-0 home decision over Hannibal.
The lone goal was scored with six minutes remaining in the first half. A corner kick by senior Jon Najera set up junior Alan Magana for a blast six feet from the net.
The teams played close to evenly, with the Owls holding a slight advantage in shots on goal, 7-5, both Najera and junior Erik Moreņo making two attempts.
The Pirates (6-5, 3-2 NCMC) came into the match as one of the two teams remaining with only one loss in the league, chasing Marshall and Moberly -- which shared the title last year.
Senior Jacob Phillips made five saves for his sixth shutout of the season for the Owls (8-1, 4-0), who host Warrensburg in a non-conference match today.
Volleyball: Chillicothe 2, Marshall 0
CHILLICOTHE -- Sophomore Samantha McKiddy had 13 kills and three blocks to pace Chillicothe during a 25-14, 25-15 non-conference home win over the Marshall volleyball team.
The Lady Owls jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first game before Chillicothe scored seven straight points to tie to score. Marshall surged ahead by three points, but the Lady Hornets reeled off 11 straight.
The second set wasn't as streaky, Chillicothe gradually building a substantial cushion. Senior Bradee Gabel had 16 assists and senior Katie Jo Ross tallied 18 service points for the Lady Hornets (5-6-1).
The Lady Owls only had six successful attacks, two each by seniors Becca Keller and Susan Skogsberg. Junior Taylor Ervin came up with seven digs and Keller served three aces.
Marshall (7-8-3) will head to Kirksville for an NCMC match Thursday.
Softball: Hannibal 10, Marshall 1
HANNIBAL -- Hannibal blew open a tight game with four runs in both the fifth and sixth inning for a 10-1 NCMC win over the visiting Marshall softball team.
The Lady Owls trailed 2-0 when a lead-off walk to sophomore LaVona Lawton began a fifth-inning rally. With runners on the corners and one out, junior Stephanie Stark singled in a run. Senior Alex Sprigg was held at third base on the throw from right field, but an attempted pick-off of the runner on second went into center field.
Sprigg tried to score, but junior Allison Baker nailed her at the plate and senior Alyson Conn struck out the next batter to end the inning with the Lady Pirates ahead, 2-1.
Conn tripled in a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring on junior Sara Wasinger's single. Sophomore Elaina Myers stroked a two-run double, with RBI singles from freshman Abbey Conn and Wasinger sealing the win for Hannibal (6-15, 4-8 NCMC) -- which has won five of its last eight games after starting the season 0-12.
Senior Emily Aldredge had two hits for Marshall (1-13, 0-8), which plays Thursday at Moberly.
