Lady Vikings lose two in Tucson
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Tucson Invitational schedule gave the Missouri Valley College softball team more than it could handle Tuesday.
The Lady Vikings began the day with a 12-3 loss to ninth-ranked Dickinson State (N.D.), an NAIA Tournament team last year, followed by a rematch against Purdue-North Central (Ind.) -- falling 10-5 to a club which beat them by a run two days earlier.
The Blue Hawks (11-2) wasted little time jumping all over Valley, sophomore Jody Lantz smacking a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning.
Dickinson State banged out six hits for five runs in the third, two scoring on freshman Sara Jane Webster's single, and four more runs in the fourth as Webster drilled a three-run blast.
The Lady Vikings got an unearned run in the second and two in the third when junior Heather Sliger doubled and came in on sophomore Sydney Kaneshiro's single.
Valley was tied 3-3 with the Lady Panthers heading down the stretch, thanks largely to junior Kimberly Fuller's two-run shot in the fourth, but that changed rapidly in the top of the sixth.
Purdue (4-4) scored the first four of seven runs with only one hit, a double by junior Stephanie Zaharias following two walks and three straight errors.
Junior Betsy Maher added a two-run single for the only other hit of the frame. The Lady Vikings (4-7) are scheduled to play six more games in Arizona this week.
