Girls' Tennis/Lady Owls sweep Trenton Quad

Monday, September 10, 2007

TRENTON -- Senior Courtney Henley returned to the line-up Saturday for the Marshall girls' tennis team, claiming three singles victories as the Lady Owls swept the field.

Henley shook off a little rust, after missing three matches to injury, during her 8-6 win to help Marshall down Chillicothe, 8-1. She rolled through her next two No. 3 contests by 8-1 margins as the Lady Owls blanked both Trenton and Savannah, 9-0.

Seniors Amy Durham, Kelsey Franklin and Ali Brandt and sophomores Virginia Hutcherson and Kara Ward were never beaten, nor seriously challenged, dropping no more than three games in any set.

Marshall's only loss was by seniors Jenny Gilpin and Chere Wright at No. 1 doubles, an 8-6 setback to the Lady Hornets, but the duo rebounded with a pair of wins. The Lady Owls' other doubles teams, juniors Kim Van and Olivia Butler at No. 2 and senior Brittany Wallace and sophomore Audra Taylor at No. 3, went undefeated.

Marshall (8-0) will be in Columbia today for a dual against NCMC rival Hannibal.
