ConAgra crushes Rose Acre to start season
ConAgra made sure the Babe Ruth Junior League summer baseball season got off to a roaring start Tuesday by scoring 12 runs in the top of the first inning to defeat Rose Acre Farms, 18-4.
Evan Johnson got things going with a lead-off triple for ConAgra. Nathan Cato's double and a single by Jerrad Kelly brought in runs. A walk loaded the bases for Tanner Dillon, who cleared them with a double to make it 6-0.
ConAgra wasn't nearly done. Another free pass brought up Johnson again, this time completing the circuit with an inside-the-park homer to plate three runs. A walk, Ryan Smith's RBI single, a bunt single by Kelly and an error finished the spree.
Rose Acre got something going during its half of the frame when Zach Pannell hit a two-out triple. Three walks and an error produced two runs. Michael Hammer held ConAgra in check in the second, but Rose Acre was also retired in order by Johnson.
A hit batter, two errors and botched fielder's choice brought two runs in and put two runners on base for Christian Castle -- who knocked them home with a single.
Hammer had a two-run triple in the third for Rose Acre, but a pair of bases-loaded walks got those runs back in the ConAgra half of the fourth before Lucas Hart set down the side in order during Rose Acre's final at-bat.
Johnson had three hits and drove in three runs for ConAgra (1-0). Hammer's three RBIs paced Rose Acre (0-1).
The nightcap between Coreslab and defending league champion Red Cross Pharmacy was rained out in the top of the first.
