ALMA -- The Santa Fe girls' basketball team couldn't beat Lone Jack the second time around, but was more competitive during a 41-38 loss Monday in first round action at the Lafayette County Tournament in Alma.

During the previous meeting, the Lady Mules led by 13 points at halftime. During the rematch, the gap was a mere six points, the Lady Chiefs starting the game with 5-1 spurt. Top-seeded Lone Jack only shook off the underdogs by making six of seven free throws during the fourth quarter.

The Lady Mules (7-1) got 16 points from sophomore Jill Smith, with the other four starters each scoring at least five points.

Sophomore Michelle Aversman's eight points, six rebounds and four steals paced Santa Fe (2-5) -- which got five points off the bench from sophomore Jennifer Knipmeyer.

The Lady Chiefs will take on St. Paul -- thrashed by Wellington-Napoleon, 62-34 -- in Wednesday's consolation semifinal.
