Two Owls at state wrestling meet
COLUMBIA -- Juniors Jeremy Gochenour and B.J. Coslet are representing the Marshall wrestling program at the MSHSAA Class AAA Championships, which begin today and lasts through Saturday in the University of Missouri's Hearnes Center at Columbia.
Gochenour (27-13), ranked ninth in the 189-pound classification by MissouriWrestling.com -- after moving down from the 215-pound division earlier this season, opens against No. 3 Josh Mustain, a Raymore-Peculiar junior who has compiled a 33-7 mark.
The first-round opponent for seventh-rated heavyweight Coslet (29-8) is unranked Sikeston freshman Joe Johnson (21-18). For both Owls and their opponents, it will be their first appearances at the state meet.
The "pull" system, whereby a first-round loser qualifies for the wrestleback only if his initial opponent wins in the quarterfinals, is no longer employed -- dispensed with during last year's meet.
In the second round, the winner of the match between Gochenour and Mustain will face either No. 7 Nixa junior Dustin Martin (35-2) or DeSoto junior Daniel Tomlinson (20-6) -- both state qualifiers a year ago. Opposite Coslet and Johnson are fifth-ranked Savannah senior Keith Fillion (34-2) and No. 9 Carthage senior Aaron McKee (27-14).
Marshall sent three grapplers to the state event last year, seniors Joe Klinge (135 pounds) and Drew Ming (152) and sophomore Chandler Terry -- who won the 130-pound title, but elected to play basketball this season.
