Spectrum/Please exercise your right to vote on Tuesday
(Column ~ 11/03/06)
Had enough? I know I have. Election 2006, the fall version, has been the most aggressive, mean-spirited and all-pervasive campaign I've seen since I covered the political wars in northeastern Ohio several years ago. In some ways, I feel right at home. In others, I am totally disgusted by the barrage of negative advertising that has surrounded me for several weeks -- whether it is the hotly-contested U.S. Senate race, Amendment 2, the minimum wage proposal or our local judge's race...

Vikings win season opener
(College Sports ~ 11/03/06)
Gus Tur Climent doesn't appear to be satisfied as a "role player." The 6-foot-8, 230-pound senior center from Piles, Spain, showed he could do more than rebound Wednesday during the season opener for the Missouri Valley College men's basketball team. Tur Climent was a complete force in the paint with 14 points, 13 boards and three blocked shots as the Vikings dispatched Friends (Kan.), 93-77...

Graceland aims at ending Vikings' streak (College Sports ~ 11/03/06)
One by one, game by game, the fifth-ranked Missouri Valley College football team has been knocking out possible challengers to their top position in the Heart of America Conference race. "We've got to get one more win" to secure an NAIA playoff spot, noted Vikings head coach Paul Troth. While Valley has already claimed a share of the league title, its first since 1999, there remain two teams which can potentially catch up -- one of them being No. 16 Graceland, which hosts Saturday's tilt... -
Winter '07 College Preview/MVC Men's Wrestling/Vikings seek return to NAIA elite status (College Sports ~ 11/03/06)
The Missouri Valley College men's wrestling team may have done better at the 2006 NAIA Championships than its No. 9 ranking going in, but veteran head coach Mike Machholz was still "not happy about where we ended up." The Vikings' seventh-place showing at the national meet was its worst since becoming a small-college power in the early '90s, although it did occur during what Machholz called a season in which the program was "obviously rebuilding" following three straight top-three finishes -- including the 2003 title.. ... -
Owls fly into Class 4 playoffs (High School Sports ~ 11/03/06)
JEFFERSON CITY -- "It's an outstanding feeling," declared senior Paul Wayne Thomas before turning to a Marshall football teammate and slapping skin. "That's what we came for, baby!" What the Owls came for, and got, Thursday was a Class 4, District 13 championship -- with big plays on both sides of the ball to secure their first playoff berth since 2002 with a 28-6 victory at 10th-ranked Helias. At the halfway point of the season, that may not have appeared to be an attainable goal... -
