i don't know when it happened
the time -- the date -- the year
i just know it had a profound effect
when i realized ... god is watching

climb the ladder rung by rung
one hand -- one step -- then repeat
until it reveals your deepest defect
and you realize ... god is watching
stand upon the rickety stage
foot lights -- spot lights -- curtain
never mastering even one role
a bit nervous that ... god is watching

travel many dusty roads
one night -- one day -- one mile
with an ever changing destination
trying to see if ... god is watching

we get tangled in life's web
we fight -- we laugh -- we weep
until we go back to the clay and the dust
and we doubt that ... god is watching

i don't know when it will happened
the time -- the date -- the year
i just know this crazy life will end
then i'll know if ... god is watching ...

or maybe I won't
