Letters tell of Vietnam War experience 50 years ago
June 8, 1968
Dear Mom and Dad,
Have a few minutes so thought I would fill you in on current events. I told you about all the beer they gave us but later I found out that was only the beginning. Later they brought out a grill and barbequed steaks, also for that meal we had potato salad, potato chips, fresh tomatoes, apples, oranges, chocolate and white milk. In addition to all that, we had several cases of lunch meat.
The next morning, we moved out by APC tracks then walking two miles through rice paddies then set up in a village until 5 p.m. and moved again by tracks to a Buddhist temple where we will be staying tonight.
We were close to a river again so I washed myself and clothes then I went downtown and bought some kind of soup with meat, noodles and all kinds of spices mixed together; it was very good. I had a pretty good day and got to see a little more country.
Gee, it sounds like you are really having a wet spring. How high does it have to get at home before it floods the ranch: Had you still been doing dozing in the bottom?
Well, donít know of any other news so will close. It gets light at 6 a.m. and gets dark at 7:30 p.m. The people are really getting with the planting over here, since the rains everything has greened up and crops are growing fast.
I just got your letter dated June 1. My package should be back at Smoke, so I will get it when I get back. Will close for now, thank you for everything.
