Feeder Cattle Auction Report for 5/8/2018

Receipts: 2606 Week Ago: 2818 Year Ago: 3762

Compared to last week, steers and heifers traded mostly steady except steer
calves under 550 lbs selling 5.00-10.00 lower. Once again several consignments
of mostly calves were brought to town but the sale was highlighted by four loads
of 930-970 lb quality yearling steers. The fed cattle market is in an
interesting spot as the June Live contract is $20.00 below where fat cattle
traded last week as packers are still in need of cattle. Demand for beef is good
and cutout values have been on the rise. The month of May will tell whether or
not the gap is closed between the cash market and the board. Demand was good for
a moderate supply. The feeder offering was made up of near 58 percent steers and
bulls and 42 percent heifers with 49 percent over 600 lbs. Cows and bulls
totaled 15 percent of the offering. Slaughter cows sold steady to 1.00 lower.
