Slater BOE hears monthly reports, talks KIDS bond issue
Superintendent Debbie Gonzalez took time during the Slater School Board of Education meeting Tuesday, April 17, to thank everyone who helped pass the KIDS bond issue, which appeared on the April 3 municipal election ballot.
The KIDS bond issue passed with 231 votes for the issue, and 37 votes against the issue. Board members approved the bond election results for the proposition KIDS issue during Tuesday’s meeting.
According to meeting minutes, GRP Mechanical Contractors will be at the school Friday, April 20, and the first week of May to start working on the project.
Gonzalez also thanked everyone who came out to support the school’s McTeacher night Tuesday, April 10, where proceeds went to help the school’s library.
According to meeting minutes, board members approved Nick Allegri as the high school guest speaker for this year’s graduation ceremony.
Slater High School graduation will be Sunday, May 13, at 4 p.m.
High School Principal Jessica Clements presented her report Tuesday, saying enrollment at the high school is at 120 students, with attendance at 93.8 percent.
Clements reported the academic team won districts on Saturday, April 14, and will compete in sectionals Tuesday, April 24.
According to meeting minutes, high school students will take the state ACT test on Tuesday, April 24.
“We’re gearing up on EOC testing this week,” Clements said. “This will be the first year we’ve tested on Chromebooks. District Counselor Janell Castle and the teachers have worked very hard to be ready.”
Elementary Principal Becky Drummond also presented a report Tuesday evening, according to meeting minutes. Drummond reported enrollment for preschool through eighth grade is currently at 243, with 95.68 percent attendance year-to-date.
“MAP testing has been running smoothly,” Drummond reported. “The students have been very focused, and seem to enjoy testing in their own classrooms.”
MAP testing is scheduled to be completed on Friday, April 20.
Class field trips will be taking place over the next couple weeks, according to meeting minutes. Elementary students recently enjoyed a trip to the Lyceum Theatre Friday, April 13, where they saw “A Year With Frog and Toad.”
Drummond thanked Central Missouri AgriService and the Slater PTO for their donations to make the trip possible for students, according to the minutes.
During Tuesday’s meeting, board members approved the certification of election results as certified by the county clerk.
Secretary Tedd Wiseman swore in incumbent members Mechelle Pannell and Jason Stockman, who were both re-elected to the school board. Pannell received 143 votes during the April 3 municipal election, and Stockman received 202 votes.
Joey Gochenour will continue serving as the board president, Jayme England will retain her position as vice president, and Tedd Wiseman was voted back in as secretary of the board.
Board members approved a membership with Missouri School Board Association in the amount of $3,316 for the 2018-2019 school year, as well as approving payroll and bills in the amount of $272,214.91, the minutes stated.
All board members were present Tuesday evening. The Slater School Board of Education will meet again Thursday, May 17, at 6 p.m.
