Lady 'Hounds smash Orrick in three innings
ORRICK -- It took only three innings for the Sweet Springs to dispose of Orrick during an 18-3 road win Monday.
The Lady Greyhounds blew out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three walks, two errors, a hit batter, junior Sydney Vaught's single and a two-run double by sophomore Emma Sims.
The Lady Bearcats (0-8) got all of their runs in the bottom of the frame as senior Abby Capps smashed a bases-loaded triple, but freshman pitcher Kynleigh Fuehring allowed only one more hit.
Seven free passes helped Sweet Springs score six runs in the second and Sims hit another two-run double in the four-run third.
The Lady 'Hounds (8-1) followed with an 11-8 win Tuesday at Crest Ridge, but additional details were not available. They play Wednesday at St. Paul.
LINCOLN -- The Santa Fe softball team saw defeat snatched from the jaws of victory in the first of two games Monday at Lincoln. It lost the nightcap handily.
Lincoln held a 2-0 lead until the top of the sixth inning of the opener, when the Lady Chiefs scored four runs -- three on errors and the other on sophomore Carrigan Smith's double.
The Lady Cardinals (16-2) -- who finished third in the MSHSAA Championships a year ago -- answered with six runs in the bottom of the frame, freshman Alexis Harms tying the contest with a two-run single and the rest scoring on a bases-loaded walk and defensive miscues.
Butler took a 10-5 lead into the seventh inning of the second game, then scored 13 runs to bury Santa Fe, 23-5.
Sophomore Lilli Colburn went five for five and drove in five runs and senior Chelsey Ketron had four hits, a double and two triples, and scored four runs for the Lady Bulldogs (6-5).
The Lady Chiefs (3-5) got three hits, a run and an RBI from senior Brittany Dillon. Next up for Santa Fe is a road game Thursday at Lone Jack.
Concordia 15, Sweet Springs 5
CONCORDIA -- Concordia put up crooked numbers in four of six innings Monday during a 15-5 home win over the Sweet Springs baseball team.
The Greyhounds got RBI doubles from senior Zack Giffen and sophomores Hunter Sims and Jacob Hall in the top of the first, but the Orioles took the lead on senior Cameron Cooper's three-run triple in the second.
Junior Lane Mueller doubled and freshman Austin Droege tripled for three runs in the Concordia third before the visitors got a pair of runs five free passes in the fifth.
The Orioles pulled away from there with three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth on eight straight singles. Cooper led Concordia (7-3) with four RBIs.
Sims and junior Nick Ortzian each had two hits for Sweet Springs (1-6), which lost 3-1 at Crest Ridge on Tuesday and will play at St. Paul on Wednesday.
