Norwood Gray ‘Speedy’ Read

Norwood Gray "Speedy" Read, 99, of Kerrville, Texas, passed away on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Kerrville, Texas. The family invites you to send condolences at by selecting the "Send Condolences" link. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville, Texas.

He was born in Cooper County to F. Norwood and Cecil Read on Aug. 19, 1918. Speedy grew up in Marshall and graduated from Missouri Valley College in 1939. He married Dorothy Mae Delfs of Abilene, Kan. Speedy was a United States Army veteran of the European Theater in World War II and the Korean War. He received numerous medals including the Bronze Star Medal with oak leaf cluster. After retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1960, Speedy moved his family to Littleton, Colo., where he worked for General Motors Acceptance Corporation. In 1980, Speedy and Dorothy retired to the Kerrville, Texas area. He enjoyed playing golf, bridge and volunteer work including the annual senior games.

He is survived by his children, Rick Read and wife Ginger of Ponte Vedra, Fla., Sue Morganegg and husband Denny of Yorkville, Ill., and Steven Read and wife Rosemarie of Naples, Fla. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rick and Kim Read, Rachelle and Scott Moyers, John and Kelly Morganegg, Scott Morganegg and Linda Burton; and nine great-grandchildren.

Speedy is preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Dorothy.
