Seven Owls medal at Richmond meet
RICHMOND -- The Marshall wrestling team had seven entries grab medals Saturday at the Richmond Invitational, the final regular season even before the districts tournament begins.
Senior Jonathan Sprigg led the Owls by taking the 285-pound championship. After a pin and 7-1 decision, Sprigg lost his final pool match to Excelsior Springs senior Dylan Casey by fall.
However, his record was good enough to reach the semifinals, where he beat Kearney senior Cooper Wilkins with a third-period pin and then stuck Maysville senior Michael Saucedo with 3:29 remaining in the title bout after building a 7-0 lead.
Some weight classes didn't have enough entries to rate a bracket, so the pool winner got the trophy. One of those was at 126 pounds, where senior Dalton Landreth won his first four matches -- on two pins, a technical fall and a tough 3-2 decision over Richmond sophomore Rance Weigand with a takedown with 24 seconds remaining -- but came in second due to a 6-4 loss to Maysville senior Dylan Wade, the difference a two-point near-fall midway through the second period.
Marshall had three grappler place third, freshman Gavin Mills (106 pounds) beating Richmond freshman Tristen Nibarger, 10-5, and senior Cameron Morrison (132) pinning Kearney freshman Will Locke in the second set.
Sophomore Ethan Stickels (160) split four matches for a third-place showing while senior T-Love William (138) and junior Sebastian Colbert (170) each won twice to claim fourth place. The Owls also got a pair of wins each from seniors Eli Jackson (152) and Michael Root (220).
Marshall will compete Friday and Saturday in the Class 3, District 4 Tournament at Winnetonka in North Kansas City.
