Feeder Cattle Auction Report for 12/12/2017

Receipts: 2869 Week Ago: 4856 Year Ago: 3858

Compared to last week, steers and heifers traded steady to 6.00 higher,
gaining back all of last week’s losses. Cattle futures showed strength
on Tuesday with modest gains and buyers were active in their pursuit of cattle.
The colder temperatures have helped the local cash market as the hard freeze
lowers the health risk for all cattle but specifically the spring born calves.
There were some wide ranges in condition of the cattle within the same weight
ranges as some good doing calves weighed up right along with some thin yearling
cattle. However demand was mostly good and very good for male calves under 525
lbs as those cattle sold with a higher undertone. Demand was moderate to light
for fleshier heifers. The feeder offering was made up of near 55 percent steers
and bulls and 45 percent heifers with 52 percent over 600 lbs. Cows and bulls
totaled 15 percent of the offering. Slaughter cows sold steady to 3.00 higher.
