Feeder Cattle Auction Report for 10/24/2017

Receipts: 1365 Week Ago: 1529 Year Ago: 1075

Compared to last week, the best test for steers was for the 500-700 lbs
weight range and those calves sold steady to 3.00 higher. A couple packages of
450-500 lbs traded 5.00 higher. A load and a few lots of yearlings sold with a
higher to sharply higher undertone. Buyers are eager to buy those cattle that
will finish out between December and April as those Live contracts currently
have a 6.00-7.00 dollar premium to the months on either side of them. Heifers
sold steady to 5.00 higher with the exception of 350-450 lbs trading 5.00-10.00
higher. Buyers were picky about what they were looking for in terms of age,
condition and how long a group of cattle had been weaned. However they were
willing to pay for those cattle that fit their order. Some of the fleshier,
shorter weaned cattle found a tougher market in spots. Demand was moderate to
very good with a moderate supply. A frost is in the forecast for the latter part
of the week. The feeder offering was made up of near 66 percent steers and bulls
and 34 percent heifers with 53 percent over 600 lbs. Cows and bulls totaled 13
percent of the offering. Slaughter cows and bulls sold 1.00 to 3.00 lower.
