Loretta L. Cook, 91, of rural Slater, died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at Big Bend Retreat in Slater.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Slater, with the Rev. Jess Spurgin officiating. Burial will be in Miami Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Mrs. Cook will lie in state at the church from 10 a.m. Saturday until time of the services. Memorials are suggested to Miami Cemetery or American Stroke Foundation in care of Weiker Funeral Home in Slater.

Born Dec. 20, 1925, north of Slater, she was the daughter of the late John H. and Cecil Carr Vernold. On March 12, 1942, in Marshall, she married Kermit A. Jennings, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 1976. On July 17, 1982, in Miami, she married Arthur A. Cook, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1998. Mrs. Cook was a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church north of Slater and a lifelong area resident.

She is survived by three sons, Wayne Jennings and his wife, Mary, of Effingham, Kan., John Jennings and his wife, Glenda, of Marshall, and Randy Jennings and his wife, Pamela, of Miami; nine grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Wilbur Vernold, Richard Vernold and Leland Vernold; and four sisters, Berniece Harvey, Alice McDowell, Mary Helen Willard and a sister in infancy.
