Owls subdued at Hannibal, 13-3
HANNIBAL -- The Marshall baseball team scored first, but not often enough Friday during a 13-3, five-inning NCMC loss at Hannibal.
The Pirates chased sophomore starter Duffin Makings without recording an out as the first four batters reached base on senior Chandler Moffitt's leadoff triple, a single by sophomore Lawson Rickey and two walks. Two errors and RBI single by sophomore Gabe Worthington brought in the final two of the five runs scored in the bottom of the first inning.
The Owls had scored once in the top of the first on junior Kyle Weber's double, but had a runner thrown out at third base and left the bases loaded.
Marshall closed the gap to 5-3 when sophomore Isaac Yung doubled and came in on senior Edward Hecke's bunt in the third and a walk and two errors in the fourth.
Hannibal responded with an eight-run fourth as senior Scot Roberts, junior Colton Brown, sophomore Wyatt Whitaker and junior Wyatt Waelder stroked RBI singles and Moffitt capped the rally with a two-run double.
Brown allowed only two runs on four hits in four innings of work to get the win for the Pirates (2-0, 2-0 NCMC).
Makings and senior Kaleb Bishop both had doubles for Marshall (0-4, 0-3), which plays Tuesday at defending NCMC champion Boonville.
