Feeder Cattle Auction Report for 1/31/2017

Receipts: 2560 Week Ago: 3224 Year Ago: 1782

   Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold mixed. Steer calves
under 500 lbs 2.00-7.00 higher; 500-700 lbs mostly steady; over 700 lbs
5.00-10.00 lower with the overall quality not as attractive as last week
on the bigger cattle. Heifer calves under 550 lbs steady to 5.00 higher;
over 550 lbs steady to 5.00 lower. Several buyers aggressive in their
search of grazing cattle made for an active market for the light weight
calves. Demand was very good for calves and light to moderate for yearlings
after the recent bearish cattle on feed report which showed placements
much higher than expected putting negative pressure on the fed cattle
market. Buyers were a lot pickier about condition this week than they have
been for a while and a good portion of the offering was carrying some extra
flesh with some very fleshy. Supply was moderate. The feeder offering
consisted of near 63 percent steers and bulls and 37 percent heifers with
47 percent over 600 lbs. Cows and bulls totaled 14 percent of the offering.
Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold 3.00-4.00
higher.
