Owls win Matwarming matches
The Marshall wrestling team won its third straight dual match Tuesday with a pair of non-conference Matwarming victories.
The Owls defeated Father Tolton Catholic of Columbia in the opener, 54-23, and then after the ceremonies got by Tipton, 48-30.
Marshall took six of the 10 bouts against the Trailblazers (3-10), all by fall, plus got 18 points on defaults. Of the six pins, five were in the first period -- including one for junior Cameron Morrison (132 pounds), a two-time state qualifier making his season debut after missing the first semester.
Seniors Hunter Hostetter (126) and Edward Hecke (220), juniors T-Love William (138) and Ryan Henderson (195), and sophomore Matthew Huston (160) also stopped their opponents. William's victory was a stunner, given that he trailed 9-2 midway through the second period before a reversal put senior Alex Currier on his back for a quick fall.
Marshall had a more difficult time against the Cardinals (1-4), splitting 10 matches evenly and getting their margin of victory on 18 default points.
The Owls were down 12-0 before a default and pins by William and junior Eli Jackson (145) moved them briefly in front. After falling behind 24-18, Marshall evened matters with sophomore Kayl Case's pin before again finding themselves playing catch-up.
With two open weight classes by Tipton and falls going the way of Hecke and junior Jonathan Sprigg (285), the Owls reeled off the final 24 points in a row.
Up next for Marshall (6-8), which got its first NCMC win of the season Thursday over Boonville, 48-28, is the two-day Capital City Invitational -- which starts Friday at Jefferson City.
