The city of Slater opened the holiday season with its annual turkey giveaway and Christmas lighting ceremony on Wednesday evening, Nov. 23.

Mayor Stephen Allegri, with help from Santa Claus, Assistant City Administrator Gene Griffith and the Slater Fire Department, handed out turkeys to families present during the night's festivities. Children drew names while Allegri announced sponsors of each of the turkeys. Those who were present claimed their bird as their names were called. In addition, children could do activities during the event.

The city's Christmas lights and the mayor's Christmas tree were also lit during the ceremony, after children helped count down from 10 before the switch was flipped.

Allegri estimated they gave away approximately 75 turkeys at last year's ceremony.
