Fitzgibbon Hospital to hold 10th anniversary Fling Gala

The 10th anniversary of The Fling, the Fitzgibbon Hospital Foundation's annual spring fundraiser, will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 18, at the Martin Community Center. This year's theme is "Puttin' on the Ritz for Fitz" and promises to be an amazing evening as supporters of Fitzgibbon Hospital don their evening wear and bid on one-of-a-kind auction items to raise money for the not-for-profit 501(c)3 hospital.

"The Fling Gala has really become a wonderful and impactful event for our hospital," said Dr. Darin Haug, president and CEO of Fitzgibbon Hospital. "It is a night for our community to both share in the celebration of what we have and to come together in the spirit of giving back to the significant needs around us. Jackie Finnegan, The Fling Committee members, and members of our staff have worked so hard make this event successful, and we grateful for their dedication. Everything raised at The Fling goes right back to benefit our community."

This year, food for The Fling will be provided by Jackson's LLC and Fitzgibbon Hospital Chef Sara Coman. Coman will prepare the salad and appetizers including beets tartare, bacon-wrapped dates, chorizo stuffed mushrooms, arancini (risotto with mozzarella and prosciutto), a seafood cold bar, and salad with mixed greens and arugula salad. The main course, prepared by caterer Correy Jackson of Jackson's LLC, includes prime rib, smoked salmon, truffle butter twice-baked potatoes, roasted Brussels sprouts, balsamic glazed carrots, assorted breads and crème brûlée with chocolate truffles.

Attendees will have an opportunity to bid on numerous silent auction baskets and items donated from local businesses and individuals who are passionate about advocating for Fitzgibbon Hospital. In addition, several one-of-a-kind live auction items will be available, including a trip to London, autographed Dreadnaught acoustic-electric guitar, artwork and sculptures, progressive and murder mystery dinners, a hand-hammered steel firepit and several other items.

The Wine Grab will return this year after a successful inaugural in 2015. At The Fling, attendees can purchase a chance to win wines via a "blind" grab. Wines are valued at between $15 and $225, but the value is not revealed at the time of selection. The only distinguishing mark will be the ribbon used to wrap the bottle. Selections include red, white, and other varietals.

"We are so thankful for our sponsors. Without them, this event would not be as successful," said Jackie Finnegan of the Fitzgibbon Hospital Foundation. "2016 Fling silver sponsors are AMERICOLLECT, Naught-Naught Agency, Red Cross Pharmacy and Wood & Huston Bank. This year's bronze sponsors are Arcadian Moon and Winery and Medtronic. We also rely heavily on our partners at Marshall High School and Missouri Valley College to provide volunteers who make the total experience enjoyable for our guests. In addition, there are many Fitzgibbon Hospital supporters who work to ensure that the event is profitable by volunteering their time or donating goods and services."

The Fund-A-Need segment of The Fling was launched in 2014. In 2014, donors funded the purchase of a GE Venue View device, which helps medical staff start IVs in patients who have been injured where starting an IV might prove difficult. Last year Fund-A-Need raised money to purchase a newborn fetal monitor for the Women's Center at Fitzgibbon Hospital. This year, Fund-A-Need will be designated to benefit the Helping Hands Fund (previously known as the Patient Care & Assistance Fund).

"This fund helps the staff at Fitzgibbon Hospital provide assistance to an individual who may have significant need following an accident, injury or illness," said Finnegan. "Since 2011, donors have helped Fitzgibbon Hospital reach those in our community who may not be able to afford essentials such as medication, lodging, food, home care equipment or transportation. The fund has usage limitations and does not pay for hospital bills, but it helps our staff care for those in need even after discharge."

A gala with the number of attendees and wonderful decorations, food and auction items requires a significant commitment of time and dedication. Members of the 2016 Fling and Wine Grab committees are Jacque Eidson, Sarah Haug, Gabrielle Huston, Ginger McGraw, Jessie Oxford, Katie Shannon, Donna Smith and Jan Stapleton.
