MDN reader predictions disagree with groundhog

Tuesday, February 2, 2016

For the first time in three years, Punxutawney Phil predicted an early spring Tuesday morning, Feb. 2.

In a recent poll conducted on The Marshall Democrat-News website, 51 readers responded to the question "Groundhog Day is Tuesday, Feb. 2. Punxsutawney Phil is scheduled to leave his burrow at 7:25 a.m. (EST). What is your prediction for winter?"

Of the respondents, 58.8 percent said they thought we would see cold weather throughout February and early March, predicting six more weeks of winter. Just 25.5 percent agreed with Phil that a warm spring would arrive early. Another 15.7 percent claimed that they didn't care as long as wet weather didn't delay the planting of crops in the spring.
